Southampton SMEs urged to ‘go green’

A number of builders will be urging small to medium sized (SME’s) businesses in Southampton to ‘go green’ in the near future.

SME’s in Southampton will have the chance to expose themselves to the ‘green’ construction market at a conference which is being held today.

A free workshop at B&Q House in Chandler’s Ford will give an insight into the potential green construction market and carbon reducing technology.

enviromental businessThe South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE) is urging construction businesses to get involved in the Government’s new Green Deal, which will allow households to spend an average of £10,000 on energy saving home improvements.

Many builders and construction businesses can cash in on the new scheme as an estimated £500 billion will be spent on retrofitting the UK’s domestic buildings over the next 40 years.

The free workshop will provide SMEs in the South East with business support as part of the European funded £2 million FLASH + programme.

Members of the FLASH+ will receive 12 hours of free business support to ‘understand the contributing factors to discrepancies between the predicted and actual performance of buildings.’

The non-profit organisation, SECBE, revealed that there are 300,000 people in the South East who work in the construction industry, generating £18 million a year for the local economy.

SECBE ‘s Head of Market Development, Tina McGeachan, said; “There’s almost a tidal wave of new technology flooding into mainstream building and construction, but the problem is knowing how effective it really is.”

“FLASH+ aims to cut through the ‘greenwash’ and help smaller companies to identify opportunities, and provide reliable solutions to grow their business in today’s difficult marketplace.”

The workshop will feature refitting the end of a terraced Victorian house in to an eco-home, demonstrating how to make an old house ‘green.’
