Wandsworth rail transport network is getting a facelift as construction is now underway to prepare a new cross-London rail service.
The construction at Clapham Junction, which is funded by the TFL and being delivered by Network Rail, will create a brand new line on the London Overground between Clapham Junction and Surrey Quays, including Wandswoth.
The fast service trains to the Docklands are expected to be available from December 2012. But by missing out on Olympic tourism, will Wandsworth businesses miss out?
The service will run four trains per hour, stopping at Wandsworth Road, Clapham High Street, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye and Queens Road Peckham.
The journey will then continue as far north as Dalston Junction in Hackney. The journey time is expected to take just 20 minutes between Clapham junction and Surrey Quays station.
“The new service will transform journey times to the Docklands and provide a major economic boost for Battersea,” said Wandsworth Council’s Transport Spokesman Cllr Russell King.
“It’s another step forward for our Wandsworth Travel Choices campaign which is focused on providing local people with new, faster and more convenient transport options.”
The works at Clapham Junction involve converting Platform 2 into two separate platforms to accommodate the existing and new services, renewing sections of track and relocating an equipment cabin.
The council expect work to be complete in early 2012. Passenger numbers have increased by 233% in the last 4 years on the London Overground and Wandsworth Council has campaigned for nine years for a direct route between South-West London and North London without travelling through Zone one.
What do you think? Will this help your business or should the government be doing more for small businesses?
The Federation of Small Businesses recently said that the poor state of the UK’s road transport network cost small firms £5,000 in the last 12 months.
The FSB found that many small firms typically operate within a 40 mile radius of their work, relying heavily on the road.
